Gunz Censorship

I am a little confused by Maiet's choice of words to censor (I assume this list has not been updated since IJJI started hosting the game), and I wish to make some suggestions for it to be edited a tad.

I have gone through many of the banned words, and most of them seem okay to me though I have made a list of those that should be added.

However, I am confused by the choice to ban the word homosexual, which is the correct term to use for homosexuals. Lesbian is the acceptable term for women, and it is not banned, so homosexual should be allowed as well.

I do understand that it is impossible for IJJI to eliminate bad words and hate among its community, but I think most of us will agree that the Gunz gaming community is in dire need of some maturity. This is why I pose that a few words be added to the censorship list.

Here is a list of some of the words that are offensive, but allowed in chat:

Of course, this is only a short list, and I highly doubt that IJJI would ever ban all these words. I just made the list relatively big to prove a point.

As we know, IJJI is not America, and therefore not protected by whichever amendment allows freedom of speech. I am not American -- in Canada, freedom of speech is not protected in the same way, because we have reasonable limits clause in our Constitution, which allows laws against hate speech to be made. And since IJJI has already blocked quite a few words, why stop there? Many of the words listed above are MORE OFFENSIVE or JUST AS OFFENSIVE as many of the blocked words.

I’ve already sent a message similar to this to a few of the IJJI GM’s, but they politely ignored me. I’m sorry for saying so many bad words on the forums, but I to to make my point.
I’m expecting flaming for being a newb ingame, and to the forums, so go ahead.

And how many nazi's are there today? They are actually referred to as neo-nazi's, I believe. And you really don't encounter many history discussion in gunz -- I'm not sure what games you're playing in :)

Does it matter what they censor? Words are only words, sometimes in-game, you're bullets speak louder than words (actually they do, a LOT, because I turn of general chat :P)

You're right most of them aren't said, and you can turn general chat and whisper off, but it is an online game! and talking to people in online games is a big part of it! I know it's not required, but it sure is nice.

maybe I'm just whining, but I get really ticked off at all the racist comments I hear on this game, and I believe that censoring a few words on this game, might slowly make it a better community. I figure only the truely mean people would go to the effort of making racist comments after most of the common terms spellings are blocked.

Yea I see your point, its kind of pointless to ban some words but not others. Any of these words can be spelled differently and get past the filters though. It is easy to do this. I like how the system is set up in Guild Wars. In GW a player has the choice to turn the filter on or off. This causes players that like to cus to turn it off and just say the normal word. This makes it posable for the people that find these words hurtful to turn the filter on and never hear one of them. This would take to much time to make though, it would tak e malet about a year or two just to design it....

I don't think Nasi or Fairy should be blocked though. What if someone is trying to talk about a book or something and they say Fairy? It would be kid of stupid, at least thats what I say.

Maiet is Korean, but that doesn't matter. I might be completely wrong here as I don't plan on researching this, but doesn't IJJI have the source available to them to edit? They make updates every once in a while, add new premiums and such... maybe they need permission from Maiet to implement changes, I'm not sure.

Great suggestion, I wish they could do, but I agree that it would be too hard to setup, and the benefits aren't worth the time.

Yes, I agree about Fairy, and even Nazi not being blocked. I just made the list big for effect. I've never even heard half of the ones I listed in Gunz. People tend to stick to a common few.

I really just wanted to put my opinion out there, so I can at least say I tried to do something, though I never believed that IJJI would do anything about it -- they have a lot of more important matters to attend to, like the increasing amount of hack leachers.

The US's first amendment (commonly referred to as the "Freedom of Xs") does not protect hate speech, racial slurs, profanity or vulgar language in public domain, or any speech which would cause the public to become a danger to itself (such as the proverbial "crying fire in a crowded movie theater"). It's primary and ONLY function is to protect the losing side of a debate, which is essential to preventing a bipartisan system from becoming an oligarchy should the winner imprison the losing party.

Thank you for informing me. My knowledge of the US is quite limited, and I'd rather not spend my time on Wikipedia or other such learned websites researching :). I was just going off what I've heard about hate speeches being made without redress in the United States, though I'm a firm believer in avoiding the news, so my sources are far from infallible.

Yes, I realise that. I figure that blocking the main words and a few of the common spellings would deter the greater population from spewing hate, and raping the gunz community of its potential goodness. But I know there will always be people out there who are either uncapable of sophisticated thought, having a civilized conversation, or a racism-free conversation, will always resort to neandrathalic slandering.

As I've mentioned before, however, I don't expect anything to happen from this thread, I just wouldn't be able to live with myself if I sat idle and said nothing.

It hasn't stopped anything. This game has violence, and promotes violence, therefor is a 15+ game.
