View Full Version : A New (maybe) Game Type I Found On Japan Gunz

Just a forewarning: I was feeling very talkative when I made this, so if you want to pull a tl;dr and get the short version, scroll down to the asterisks (***).

So I just came from Japanese Gunz like I usually do from time to time. It's an interesting experience I suppose because you have no idea what anyone is saying, or what anyone's name is, for that matter. The people there tend to whine less I believe, because they don't sit and chat back and forth for endless hours in a game, and nobody really says anything when they die. The lag there is in the 110-160 range, but it feels like 200+. I've gotten kicked only a few times, possibly because they're aware Americans will sometimes join them. It also helps that I don't say anything, especially not carry on and call people "noobs" and such. The people there are good, but I haven't seen anything incredibly special since we have good players here, and I'm able to hold my own there as well.

Anyway, skipping the whole etiquette lesson, one of the few times I played on J-Gunz, well over a year ago, the players were engaging in a strange TDM match in the Mansion. I found it odd because the first round I played in, my entire team camped in the base. Being unaware, I ran far out, into the basement, looked back and figured I'd be safer if I stayed with my team in the base. The next round, everyone ran out, and went to the other base where the other team was now camping inside the base. I thought that was weird, since our team just did the same thing last round. Were they copying my team? No, the next round we camped again, and the other team came to us. I got the hang of this style of TDM, then came back to (I think I was on ijji at the time, I can't remember) my regular Gunz to see that people were doing the same kind of match, only here it was called "Attack and Defend."

Now, if you somehow thought that whole explanation of Attack and Defend was this "new" game type I found on J-Gunz, you'll be glad to know I haven't completely wasted your time. This time on J-Gunz, I found a nice big TDM in the Prison in Free Channel 1. I joined it, and found a strange sight: Everyone except 2 people were on the same team. I joined it, on the team that was insanely stacked, and thought this must be some kind of exhibition room. Soon after I joined, a kick came up. I thought they were kicking me for my ping (paranoid), but I pressed Y anyway. Then I found out the kick was for the second person on the other team, leaving only 1 person on the other team and thought to myself "The title of this room must be "1 vs everyone" or something. What was scary was this person had 5-0, but he was level THREE. I thought maybe he hacked, but then he would be kicked? Was he insanely pro? No, this was a special type of TDM, like when I found out about A&D.

So, as I watched the people on my team play from spectator mode, I was confused when I saw them stop suddenly, and LET the singular person on the other team kill them. I wondered if this was some kind of pity room, like let the newb level or something. Then I saw they would stop after that person would sword slash them. I realized they must be playing some kind of "Prisoner Escape" game, since it was in the Prison II. So, as I played, I stopped in front of the person who was "it" on the other team when he would bump me (cause I figured it might be hard to slash me with my ping), and found myself fitting in. Afterwards, the map was changed from Prison to Town, and this time a new person was the singular on the other team. I still don't quite understand how a new person was decided, but it might have been K-D ratio from the previous round. Anyway, in the Town, everyone on the "running" team could go anywhere on the map except the alleys within the Town. That meant the main road, from the blue base, to the clock, and to the red base. This time around, I found myself doing well, and actually made it to the end of the round one time. Afterwards I left, because I felt strange about my ping.

***
But long story short, the game mode is pretty much like "Tag." Specifically, it goes like this:

Number of Players: Any, up to 16
Game Type: TDM
Map: Any map that has a straight, single road of travel, like the Prison II.
Team Division: 1 player on one team, everyone else on the other team. Anyone who joins the single person on his/her team must leave or be kicked.
Number of Rounds: As few as possible.
Time Limit: 5 minutes
Rules: The team with the majority of people are free to run around the map, or hide, while the single person on the other team attempts to "tag" people on the other team by slashing them. Once tagged, a person can not move, and the single team player is allowed to kill him/her. This goes on until all people on the majority team are dead, or when 4 minutes has passed. After which time, all remaining players on the majority team are allowed to kill the single team person. Also, once 4 minutes has passed, the single team person cannot kill.

The problems I see with bringing this to ijji-Gunz are pretty big. For one, Japanese players are much more mature and respectful than here. The chances of a game like this happening, and someone on the majority team NOT following the rules (going to an unacceptable part of the map, fighting the single player, not stopping after they've been tagged, joining the single person's team and refusing to leave) are so very high. J-Gunz also has the option of making 3-round matches (which is what they played by), something we do not have. On top of that, we have a ton more hackers here, and that's an instant game ruin. They do have hackers in J-Gunz, but not as many as here. People will most likely fight over the chance to be the "tagger", so it simply doesn't have the same kind of "marketability" here as it does in Japan. The same can be said for the "Personal Assistant" set. I mean, just because it's popular in Japan does NOT mean it's going to be popular here. I think it's ugly, male and female version.

I realize Tag is probably not something new to some people (I mean we have hide-and-seek), but I thought the way it was planned was interesting. So if you'd like to experience how this game mode works, your best bet is to get yourself a japanese NetMarble account and try to find a game in J-Gunz. I really don't know what to tell you what to look for as far as room names go, but I found mine as a 16 player TDM in the Prison II map. The obvious giveaway will be when you find everyone except one person on the same team.

I also took some replays of the short time I got to experience this game mode for myself. The "Win" round is broken into 2 parts, and was "won" when 4 minutes passed on the timer.

This sound cool.. I joined one game along time ago called Cs-style only.. I went in and they said you could only use a dagger and 2 Guns (besides Rocket launcher). And you couldnt tumble or dash/wall climb or any of that stuff.. It was pretty fun! =D

Nice, I find it interesting you jsut now found out about att and def XD OR was that earlier and jsut recapping on it now?
But Ontopic, overall, would be a great gameplay type..IF we didn't have immature brats every 3 people.

I remember going into a game like this, seeing all "nomsgs" and corrupted latin characters, not understanding a damned thing anyone says, and then getting molested by the tagger. ._.

Maybe I wasn't elaborate enough. I thought I was, but oh well. But yeah, I was talking about over a year ago when I found out about Att and Def.
