The Mentor System (Warning: Rant)

Ok, I honestly feel the mentor system in Luminary is the dumbest ever. The part about people who been playing awhile and have experience being able to help the new comers to the game is great! People helping people, thats what its supposed to be about. BUT ITS NOT!

Most of the mentors you see in game are all just a bunch of greedy, reward hungry, "know-it-alls" who will Spam you when you first log in, begging and crying for you to be their "mentee". I underlined "mentee" because that made-up term is perfectly suited for what you are to them; which is nothing! "Mentee" is not even a word! Student would be the applicable title, but you can't be a student unless they actually teach you something!

That in lies the problem. When someone first joins a server, the first screen that pops-up is a partial list of mentors. The list prioritizes based on experience levels of all mentors currently logged on. The results are new people logging into the game who really don't know what to do and are in desire of help, so they would naturally try to pick someone "good". But does our experience level really dictate our knowledge? Our helpfulness? No!

After having talked with many of these high leveled mentors myself, I've noticed that most of them prefer to taunt and make fun of those who are new to a game that they themselves have been playing forever. Do they actually provide advice? What I gather is that no, they do not. They recruit the "mentee" and then send them off on there way to learn the ropes on their own. In my personal experience, my first mentor actually wrote to me, "try to get to level 50 as fast as you can and you'll get 100k". After that, I have never spoken to him since, and am close to level 60 now. Was he any help to me? :no:

It turns out this was not an isolated incident. Apparently, most of these high level mentors have well over 30 "mentees" at any given time. So what does that mean? That nobody is getting any kind of help from a so called "mentor" when they first start playing. And why do these guys even bother having "mentees"? For the rewards of course. Since ijji was so generous in giving out free stuff for doing nothing but doping some "noob" into assigning you as a mentor, why not just get as many as possible?

Now don't get me wrong. There do exist a chosen few out there who are mentors that do in fact take pride in helping newcomers and making friendships. Its just sad that of all mentors, they are the smallest of percentile. I feel ijji needs to NOT REWARD for mentorship. Then there would be no reason for self-centered people to pose as a help.

And to those of you who actually read this entire rant, I urge you to look towards your in-game friends for help. I'm lucky enough to say that their are at least 3 people I can count on for help if I need it in game, and they have no ill begotten reason to do so other then just because they really wanted to.

Well I just started late last week and have had some minor problems with my mentor but he (or she) is mostly helpful. What would be nice is at 50 or whenever the mentor is suppose to get a prize the mentee chooses whether he/she was of any help to them.

I hope to become a mentor when I can and help out the community as much as possible (similar to that of SF). Almost level 40 now :D

Situation should change to better when goonzu will be choosen and will appoint minister white tiger witch can appoint his guardian angels. Those ppl should be the best mentors to choose from.

Student can always and should change mentor if hes ofline too much or unable to answer many game related questions.

Reward for mentoring might seem big but accualy time spend to learn student is worth more than 800k so...
good players are doing mentoring to help others ingame sacrifacing their own time(rare),
or bad players think its a gr8 way of earning [m] (common) :P

They don't exactly get 800k, they get 11k per level the mentee was with him. So I guess the 800k Lin mentioned about only happens when you've got a mentee since lvl1 and he/she reaches lvl50.

Hopefully I can become a mentor soon, level 45 today. Should be 50 by today/tomorrow. Only playing for less then a week now and higher then my buddy who has played for like a month.

I usually laugh when someone calls me kid in a video game. Usually when it happens it turns out they are younger then me and I guess them calling me kid makes them think of them self as older and better then me.

I am a good mentor if anyone needs one, but i only keep 4-5 at a time so i can focus on them, so if u need a mentor u have to add my IGN and tell me you want me to be your mentor =-) <3

i am level 70 something... i changed my mentor once cause they NEVER whispered me at all but i have to BEST MENTOR now he has been sooo much help to me and i dont think i would be where i am now if it wouldnt of been for him. i have a few mentees and i whisper them everytime i see them online to see if they have any questions or see if they need help of any sort...... i hope i can be a good mentor like BeaGle was to me....

Aydum it does matter when you say you have 5 names of bad mentors for every good one. I second that DarkRanger/FrozenSushi is a good mentor so now we need 5 names...

And Dane Cook movies are funny, I liked him in GLChuck, Employee of the Month, and Waiting even in his small role.

And I split reward with my mentees and help them with a lvl 1 weap rank 1 and 10 books, and mats for lvl 32-50 armor and 32-50 weap as well so my share of the reward is just paying off these things.

True. We really lack a number of good mentors. I always seem to get a random whisper from a new player asking me some questions and saying that his mentor isn't of any help or just never online.

I've played the game all of about 2-3 days.
I went into some cave last night with alot of really strong enemies, and a kid told me to leave quickly.
He met me outside and asked if i was new.
He gave me 10,000 and made a bone belt for me.
So he's very helpful in my opinion.

My mentor told me that alot of 70+ lvl mentors give their mentees a horse if the mentee reaches level 50.
My current mentor is xTonX
He said he may do this for me when i get to level 50.
I also met someone with the name --bebe i think.
He/She's really cool too.

Lol, i'm not a very good mentor but i'm gonna be once i get some dang money.Oh and, some mentees deserve to be treated bad because they say "GIVE ME NEW ARMOR NOW".I say gtfo and i kick them, and then they quit the game because they don't know how to hunt.My Main's mentee "DivineLu" was somebody who i didn't teach very well.But, my ways spread to her and that wasn't good at all:no:

When she became a mentor, she never taught her mentee's how to escape from pk'ers or how to pk.And she would send them into pk zone and tell me to kill them and then give her the mats from tin tin.Now, that was wrong and i knew it was but eh, free kill:lolz:

I would be behind trees then i'd say RAWR and jump out for the kill lol.

But she really made a HUGE turnaround.Became almasha head and became a nice player.
