This is a basic guide to Ryan’s skills for staging (because I can’t pvp to save my life. That’s for my friend icylove, the self proclaimed best pvp-er, to do) .

First impressions: Ryan is a decent DPS character, that has low CD skills with decent damage. Probably the worst tanker in the game, as he has no great close range melee strings.

Melee
A – fires one bullet
AA – fires two bullets
AAA – fires three bullets
AAAA – fires three bullets, then dashes forwards and knocks anything in the way straight up. (think of it like in Super Smash Bros Brawl, Captain Falcon’s side-B)
AAS – just like AAAA, except with one less bullet
AAAS – fires three normal bullets and then an exploding bullet

Hold S – fires a gatling gun. WARNING: this drains mana like no other, for not a lot of damage. Recommended you NEVER use this unless you have 0 mana

Dash A – runs forwards and does a physical hit. Does not launch enemies
Dash A S – runs forwards and swings, then fires an exploding bullet
Dash S – rolls, with a hit at the end of the roll. Ryan’s best way to break open boxes, rocks, etc.

Skills
Gatling

Rapid Fire (7/10)
Fires ~11 bullets while spraying side to side. Great damage if all 11 bullets hit, and you can spray it into mobs. A decent DPS skill with a 7 second cooldown, but the range of spray is a bit wide, so its almost impossible to hit with all 11.

Concentrated Shot (9/10)
Ryan jumps up and fires 5-10 shots right in front of him. Does an air combo on launchable enemies. Does great damage with AOE and only has 10 second cooldown
Recommended: Max

Diversion Shot, Right/Left Side Slide Shot (6-7/10)
They’re almost all the same skill. Ryan jumps backwards (Diversion Shot), to the right (Right Side Slide Shot), or to the left (Left Side Slide Shot) while shooting bullets forwards. Not worth leveling for damage, but you should get it for the dodging. Right/Left Side Slide Shot both have invincibility frames, but Diversion Shot doesn’t.

Impartial Shot (10/10)
Ryan jumps up and fires bullets all around him. Does great damage to everyone around him, and air combos launchable enemies. Hits each enemy about 8 times.
Recommended: Max

Grenade
Iron Bomb (7/10)
Lobs a bomb forward slowly and it explodes about ¼ of the screen away. The bullet damages when it goes through enemies and the explosion has an AOE. The explosion knocks down launchable monsters. The cast time isn’t that slow, but the bomb moves slowly.
Recommended: 0, 1, Max

Burning Land (7.5/10)
Shoots 5 missiles right in front of Ryan, each one a bit farther than the next. Each missile explodes on the ground for an AOE. The missiles move faster than Iron Bomb, and the total AOE is larger.
Recommended: 0, 1, Max

Bullet of Death (4/10)
Ryan shoots a bullet that explodes on impact with an enemy for an AOE. It only explodes if it hits an enemy. Hard to hit with because of its narrow range, and the damage isn’t amazing either. There are a lot better skills to put points into.

Flame Impact/Magma Explosion (6/10)
Essentially the same skill. Ryan shoots the ground for an AOE right in front of him. Flame Impact has more range, but in Magma Explosion, Ryan jumps backwards when he shoots. Flame Impact knocks the scarecrow from the Training Field backwards to the wall, but it doesn’t do that on any other stage, as far as I’ve seen. Nothing too great here

Sulfur Rain (8/10)
My favorite Grenade skill. Ryan shoots straight up, and after a second or so, the ground all around Ryan blows up. Huge AOE, and great damage. The only problem with it is the fairly long cast time, so it can be cancelled.

Enhance Survivability (?/10)
Projectile Specialization (?/10)
I didn’t bother getting these skills yet. I’ll try them out right before I rebirth.
If anyone else has these, I’d appreciate your input

Gun Maintenance (2/10)
Regenerates mana at the cost of HP. Some people get this over Mana Regeneration. However, I STRONGLY disagree, because:
1) It costs HP
2) Mana Regeneration is passive, so you don’t have to consciously use Gun Maintenance
3) Gun Maintenance recovers only about 1/3 of your MP per use. Not enough to spam skills.
4) Slow cast time makes it easily cancelable.

Ability
Increase Health (3/10)
Put the points into HP Regeneration. Waste of points in here.
Recommended: 0

Increase Mana (3/10)
Put the points into MP Regeneration. Another waste of points.
Recommended: 0

HP Regeneration (9/10)
I was amazed when I found out Ryan can heal. Get this skill. Other than Ryan, only Limes have this skill. Take advantage of it
Recommended: Max

MP Regeneration (9/10)
Common sense. See Gun Maintenance. Everyone needs mana.
Recommended: Max

Deadly Blow (7/10)
At max, it adds ~15%, which isn’t a lot for 8 points. However, most of Ryan’s skills do multiple hits, so it might be worth it, if you have extra SP to use.
Recommended: 0, Max

Increased Physical Damage
For the first point, it adds 31 damage, which is worth it for me, for just one point. After that, the increase isn’t nearly as much, so I don’t recommend anything more than one.

i agree with most of this but i'd have to give burning land just little more credit.

i can help a little bit with rail gun skills. the first one, rapid rail gun, is pretty decent. it comes out nearly instantly and does 2 hits, piercing through enemies to hit more enemies. reasonable damage, great range, and great casting time. 8/10 worth maxing

freeze rail gun, the freeze duration doesnt change from level to level and the damage isnt that great. worth putting one point into simply for certain combos. also piercing recommended 1 point.

amplified rail gun, hard to tell just how many times it hits, but it hits a good amount. good range and if you can air combo it by some means, the damage is enough to multiply REALLY well. also piercing. rb version is just as good. although each shot of rb version does less than regular version, you have to remember that rb is TWO shots. whats not to love? 8/10, max it.

merciless shot, havent tried it yet, just reached 60 while fishing (lulz) but whats not to love about awesome combo of 8 hits and all types of firepower for great damage?

on to blessings...
enhance survivability... i never touch the stuff. if its your thing, go for it, but its not really needed.

projectile specialization... i personally do not have any points in it, but i guess it might be good? not sure if it needs reagents though. caps out at 71

firearm maintenance discussed lower...

pa/ssive abilities...
who gets max hp? lulz waste of points.
max mp, if you're the kind of player who feels its worth points, ryan can always use more mana.

how can you go wrong with hp regen? i say max it.

now for mp regen.....
i started off with just firearm maintenance. it worked ok, but as i got more skills and more spamming it wasnt cutting it. so i got a point of mp regen to help get mana between mobs or whatever. but then i got a silly idea, why not max mp regen AND firearm maintenance? its been working pretty well for me. mp regen makes reloading less of a necessity and more of a luxury. i spam my skills constantly. regen while dodging, while casting, whats not to love? if i get low i reload for nice stimulus and im usually set for mana by the time it cools down. max one or the other, or both. from my experience, i've got both and im loving it.

crit, get at least a point into it. for ANY character, always have at least that one point. max if you want, it caps out at 10% chance.

increased physical damage... i got one point into it because whats not to love about a 0-30 boost? the skill maxes out at 77, but i dont know if that really effects damage all that much. does it affect skills too? if so does it only affect gattling gun skills since they are non elemental? same questions stand for projectile specialization. if anyone can elaborate on this i'd greatly appreciate it.

Magma explosion and flame impact are very different.

Magma explosion has faster cast rate and pushes you back, not only that it launches opponents high into the air, and is easily comboable.

Flame Impact has a slower cast rate and knocks down.

They're fairly different and deserve their own different distinctions and they have their own uses.
