It is the stat used to determine what kind of armor you can wear, so if you do not have any strength, you be getting hit pretty hard from the baddies.

While you do attack things at range as a gunner (unless your a goober) many monsters have ranged attacks.

My stats for my gunner are.
Enough Agility for my next weapon.
Enough Vitality not to get 1/2 shoted by the boss in the area in hunting in.
Enough Strength to wear the next set of armor below my level. Level 45 armor at level 50, for instance.

although gun is ranged weapon, str will still play a factor. higher str will mean higher damage for your gun

while yes, mostly str is for the close range weapons, but if you want to do higher damage for you gun, put a little into str

with my stats, i have more in agi than in str (i.e. 200 agi and about 100 str). as for vit, i have quite high vit since i do engage in GVG and solo boss hunting every now and then.

Every gun guide says only get enough str to be able to wear your next set of equipment. Why...? I would rather have lower agi than lower str...

STR affects gunners. They pick up the bullets and throw them after. Waste not want not.

Apparently, though it adds damage, it's not the primary stat for guns. My guess is it's better to use the points in the primary stat and things like MP maximum (wis?) for skills.
