Some people log into or check their email much more often than they troll a forum.
Thus the option for "subscriptions to threads", Email notification of PMs, and things like this- some guy that'll email everyone when the game comes out.
Me, I troll forums manually. >.> I'll know it's up as I skim past the main page.
